Part two of our trip, aka our last two days in Reunion before heading to Mauritius.
Day 2 & 3 was spent with our tour guide, Nikolas. He took us to the top of the Reunion volcano and to see some pretty amazing waterfalls. The thing that really got me about this place is how diverse the landscape is. Anyone who lives in South Africa is pretty used to having mountains, ocean, open plains of veld, and forest all in pretty close proximity, but Reunion was crazy! Other than the beach and jungle, the island is actually an active volcano (last active 7 years ago), which Raya named Mordor and I really can't think of a more apt title. Either that or Mars, it seriously felt like I was on a whole new planet and apparently has a striking resemblance to the planet. So magical.
We walked all over Plaine Des Sables and looked like the biggest tourists with our cameras taking pictures of EVERYTHING. Then a long drive down with a couple of stops at some more viewpoints, lots of sleeping in the car, and lunch at La Plaine des Palmistes - a local Creole restaurant. Niko then took us to see the lava flows from 2004 & 2007. My silly camera stopped working around this time which I was so bummed about, but let's just say the lava flows were one of the most beautiful things I've seen. The oldest one we saw had lichen growing all over it so it looks like an eerie river of furry rock, basically it is now my life ambition now to get back there to do a shoot one day.
The next day was spent chasing waterfalls. That, and just taking full advantage of our last bit of time at LUX* Ile De La Reunion.
Next Week : Part 03 | Mauritius!
* Looking back now, exactly 2 weeks later, I kinda can't believe we actually stood on that volcano/spent the day on a private island (more on that soon) - it feels so surreal! What an amazing adventure, and what a wonderful experience working with Legacy Lifestyle and LUX* resorts to make it all happen.
A big thanks to the trips sponsors, Piz Buin, Billabong Women, Sunglass Hut, Skullcandy, & Havaianas.
